silba

Silba - the island situated in the waterway between Zadar and Pula.
Historically rich island which offers a perfect vacation has always
been an interesting destination both for the yachtsmen and for the
people who enjoy feeling the scent of sea and pine trees from the
terraces of their apartments.
Silba is an island without any form of car transportation and
therefore suitable for the ideal sea side vacation, while the rich
vegetation offers enchanting fragrances for the enjoyment in nature.
Silba is, alongside with the island of Mljet, the most forested island
on the Adriatic and its present name derives from
the Latin word selve, meaning wood.
Pebbly beaches and hidden bays are ideal for the getaway from the everyday rush.

A small oasis of peace is inhabited and situated in the very center of
the island, which is at its narrowest point only 800 m wide,
between two ports (Mul and Žalic) with only 250 permanent
residents offers ideal vacation with excellent climate, which,
alongside with the island of Hvar, offers the largest number of
sunny day in a year average. Therefore on the island, which offers an
abundance of green vegetation and sunny days you can enjoy in
peace, and the only thing that can disturb the harmony and beauty
of the island is the gentle melody of the sea and crickets.
Rich cultural heritage mirrors it self in the very emblem
of the island which contains four fields and tells a story
of the most important moments in the history of Silba.
The wealth of the island is best shown in the total of six
churches on the entire island. Unfortunately most of
these churches are in bad condition and therefore closed
for the public whereas only the main church of
The Holly Mary in the center of the island has been
recently renewed and maintains its function throughout
the entire year. In the immediate vicinity of the main
church there is also the rectory which preserves the
wealth of the island that includes a few Rudolfo
paintings, a Tizian painting and brass crown
of the king of the island of Silba.
